Volunteer Positions

Dishwasher
Dishwashers play an essential role in keeping the Mission running safely and smoothly.
Duties:
•Wash, sanitize, and rinse pots and pans using a two-sink cleaning method
•Rinse dishes and load them into a commercial dishwasher
•Clean counters and sinks at the end of each shift
Place used rags, dishcloths, and aprons into laundry before leaving
•Follow food-handling and hygiene guidelines, including proper handwashing and wearing required attire (apron, hair net, etc.)
•Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
Shifts:
Monday to Friday, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. approximately, or until dishes are completed (time may vary based on volume).

Food Preperation
Food Prep volunteers help prepare fresh, simple food for guests arriving throughout the morning and support the kitchen team as needed.
Duties:
•Prepare sandwiches, salads, and vegetable snacks using available ingredients
•Set up food for visitors arriving at 10:00 a.m.
•Clean and sanitize food prep areas after tasks are completed
•Follow food handling and hygiene guidelines, including proper hand washing and wearing required attire (hair nets, aprons, etc.)
•Volunteers may choose to stay and assist the chef with additional tasks such as chopping produce, mashing potatoes, and helping serve lunch from
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Shifts:
Primary shift 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
(Optional additional support late morning and during lunch service)

Assistant Cook
The Assistant Cook supports the Cook with meal preparation, kitchen coordination, and guest service.
Duties:
•Assist with food preparation using commercial kitchen equipment
•Write the daily menu on the dining room board •Support kitchen workflow and food safety practices •Help ensure all kitchen volunteers follow food handling and hygiene guidelines
•Serve meals alongside the Chef during lunch service •Prepare take out meals
Requirements:
•Food Handling Certificate preferred
•Experience working in a commercial kitchen preferred
Shifts:
Monday to Friday 9 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Office Administrator
Office Administrators support the behind-the-scenes operations that keep the Mission running smoothly and organized.
Duties:
•Respond to emails and manage general correspondence
•Prepare and post information on social media platforms
•Assist with grant writing and fundraising coordination Help organize and support fundraising events as required
•Process donations and prepare tax receipts
•Track food donations by weight through computer entry and spreadsheets
•Prepare spreadsheets and materials for board meetings
•Recruit volunteers and maintain volunteer information and schedules
•Complete basic filing, word processing, and website updates
•Organize office supplies and maintain an orderly office space
Shifts:
Shifts vary based on operational needs and volunteer availability.

Cleaners
Cleaners help maintain a safe, welcoming, and sanitary environment for everyone who visits the Mission.
Duties:
•Sweep and mop all floors, including the kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, and common areas
•Vacuum entryway rugs and office space
•Wash and sanitize counters, tables, and chairs in the dining room
•Clean walls, doors, and windows as needed
•Clean two two-stall bathrooms
•Restock supplies such as paper towels, soap, and toilet paper
•Remove garbage and replace bag
•Safely use a commercial mop and wringer system, including emptying buckets
Shifts:
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
(times may vary)

Cook
The Cook oversees meal planning, preparation, and service, ensuring safe food handling and a smooth kitchen operation.
Duties:
•Plan daily menus based on available ingredients
•Prepare hot, nutritious meals using commercial kitchen equipment (gas stove, ovens, fryers, etc.)
•Communicate the daily menu to the Assistant Cook
•Ensure all kitchen volunteers follow food handling and hygiene guidelines, including proper handwashing and required attire
•Lead lunch service and serve meals to guests
•Maintain a clean and organized kitchen workspace
Requirements:
•Food Handling Certificate preferred
•Experience working in a commercial kitchen preferred
Shifts:
Monday to Friday 9 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Food Bank Assistant
Food Bank Assistants help ensure the smooth, respectful, and accurate operation of the Mission’s food bank services.
Duties:
•Process food bank applications and enter information into the computer system
•Verify required identification and documentation during the intake process
•Prepare food baskets for distribution
•Record all food baskets distributed, both manually and electronically
•Restock food bank shelves and organize inventory
Shifts:
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Helper
Helpers provide flexible support throughout the Mission and assist wherever help is needed most.
Duties:
•Set up and clear tables in the dining area
•Process, sort, and organize donations such as food, clothing, and household items
•Tidy common areas and restock supplies as needed •Assist with a variety of tasks throughout the day to support daily operations
Shifts:
Shifts vary throughout the day and are often scheduled on an as-needed basis, although regular shifts are available as well.

Driver
Drivers support the Mission by picking up donations and transporting items from locations across Amherstburg, Windsor, and Essex County.
Duties:
•Drive the Mission van to complete scheduled donation pick-ups
•Load and unload donations, including lifting and carrying items as required
•Ensure safe handling and transport of all items
•Represent the Mission in a friendly and respectful manner during pick-ups
Requirements:
•Valid driver’s license (must be provided and kept up to date)
•Ability to lift and carry items as needed
•Approved to drive under the Mission’s insurance policy
Shifts:
Shifts vary based on pick-up needs and may occur 7 days a week between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
